Required specialization options (Choose 1) As you become a rising sophomore, you will formally declare which of the four career-specific specialization areas you will pursue. Communication Studies Specialization: In addition to general expertise in human interaction and relationships, you will study the basics of graphic design, audio production, broadcast writing and digital marketing, and select electives from creative media, business and production that match your career interests. Media Production Specialization: This specialization is all about hands-on multimedia production. You'll gain a foundation in video field production, synthesis and sound design, online journalism, the music business, and web design. Media Writing Specialization: The coursework guides you through the principles of journalism for different media and audiences. Topics include advertising, social media and broadcast writing, the principles of public relations, journalism and digital marketing. Public Relations/Strategic Communication: This cutting-edge specialization focuses on creativity, interpersonal and writing skills as well as social media savvy. You will work with real clients and execute strategies and campaigns to promote and manage all aspects of their brand. Internships Multiple internship opportunities will help you perfect an integrated set of skills that will serve you well in launching a successful career. Communication majors intern with a variety of companies, including People Making Good Public Relations, FUSE Marketing, Regional Education Television Network, Hen House Media, Hall Communications, WCAX-TV, Lake Champlain Chocolates, Vermont PBS and Vermont Teddy Bear Company. Study Abroad We strongly encourage our Communication majors to study abroad for a semester during their junior year. We designed the curriculum of our majors to support a semester of international study, which means you can study in another country, even complete an internship abroad, and still graduate on time. You can choose to take your international study at our campus in Montreal, Canada, or in Dublin, Ireland, or virtually anywhere in the world through one of our Global Partners or third-party programs. Senior Capstone Project All Communication majors participate in the Capstone experience that combines professional preparation with a final project through a service-learning project-based course. During the Capstone, you move from a role where you are dependent on instruction to one in which you are an independent thinker, managing your own decisions while being responsive to others' feedback. The final project, produced in small teams, may include documentaries, podcasts, magazines, public relations campaigns or training manuals. Employment Outcomes Communication majors are prepared to work in a wide range of fields. Our graduates have held positions in video and audio production, radio, television news and sports, social media, public relations, college admissions, journalism, branding, conflict mediation, human resources, marketing and event planning. Our most recent data shows that 100% of 2016 graduates from this program are employed or continuing their education within six months after graduating, and 89% of those employed are in positions relevant to their career goals

You'll learn essential photography and videography skills as well the use of advanced digital applications in order to compete in this deadline-driven profession. Journalism just isn’t what it used to be. And that’s a good thing. The Web, social media, and the rise of citizen journalism have seismically altered how we think about and consume media. Entrenched business models have been forced to adapt –- or die. New but untested opportunities are everywhere. So what does it mean to be a journalist or publicist in today’s digital world? How do you manage — and create compelling content for — Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat and social media’s “next big thing”? What are the strengths and weaknesses of social media versus traditional media? How do we maintain high standards of reporting and ethics across all platforms? How can the byline satisfy the bottom line? And where does photojournalism — increasingly “videojournalism” — fit in to all of this? To answer these questions, we keep our program small, hands-on and practical. You’ll focus on the hard skills you need to thrive in journalism and PR: interviewing and researching, capturing the perfect image and story, and writing concisely and accurately. We tackle the realities of print, web and social media as well as current mass media theory. The Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication relies on an interdisciplinary curriculum, drawing from the theoretical and empirical approaches traditionally found in the humanities, social sciences and business. The Communication major provides students with a dynamic and comprehensive understanding of the nature of human communication, from interpersonal to mass communication, and the skills to evaluate and create effective messages for diverse audiences in various cultural contexts. In other words, the Communication major is a generalist approach for studying the symbol systems of communication, the cultures or environments within and through which communication occurs, the media used to communicate messages/concepts, and the effects of those mediated messages. The bachelor’s degree in Communication is a great choice for students who have strong verbal and written skills, are generally curious and creative, and would like to teach, inform, or persuade. SVC prepares its Communication majors for a broad range of career choices. All businesses need effective communicators to thrive economically. Indeed, all humans need to be able to communicate their ideas for better quality of life. Upon graduation, a Communication major may seek work as a communication specialist in human resources, advocacy, research and development, advertising, sales and marketing, public relations/publicity, publishing, law, politics, journalism, or technical writing. Students who excel in their studies may also pursue graduate study, earning master’s degrees in those areas. Communication majors are fortunate in that they can pursue diverse subjects in different academic divisions. Though housed in The Hunter Division of Humanities, the Communication major offers courses that share academic/disciplinary interests with academic divisions across Southern Vermont College. Students can, therefore, pursue a focus within the Communication major in areas such as cultural communication, new media, business communication, and healthcare communication. Students will discuss potential areas of focus with their advisors, putting together a plan typically in students’ sophomore year of study. In addition to receiving a broad theoretical and empirical foundation, Communication majors also complete one internship before graduation. Internships provide students with opportunities to apply theory and research and put them into practice for companies and organizations beyond the classroom. All students complete their Communication majors in one of two ways: a Senior Project or a Senior Thesis. While both involve substantial research and writing, the Senior Project is an extended, applied project relating to students’ professional goals beyond SVC. The Senior Thesis is a more traditional academic capstone to coursework and prepares students for graduate school. Students will make decisions about senior projects or theses in consultation with their advisors.

Media and Communication students thrive in a project-based environment that balances theory and practice. Working closely with faculty and peers, you will study the way media interact with society and produce video, print news, social media, websites, scripts and presentation papers in courses, The Spartan newspaper, WIUV-FM, independent projects, and internships. The Field Naturalist Program is a unique field-based experience that develops the potential of tomorrow's conservation leaders by emphasizing scientific integration, oral and written communication, and environmental problem solving.
