Our alumni work for a wide variety of organizations including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, The Associated Press, the FBI, General Motors, Varian Medical Systems, and the U.S. Navy. Three of our recent graduates were selected by the Presidential Management Fellows Program, a competitive federal internship program designed to draw outstanding students to federal service. Since its inception in 1997, the primary goal of the first online master’s program at Norwich University, the Master of Arts in Diplomacy, has been to help promote career advancement. A lot has changed in two decades - at Norwich University, in higher education and the world. Today’s incoming students and alumni represent a diverse array of industries, occupations, and nations. A volatile global financial market, national, regional and international security concerns, and a “flattening” of the world, to borrow a phrase from Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, Thomas Friedman, all have resulted in increased stakes for activity that extends beyond one’s borders and within. Making sense of the political, social, and cultural nuances of the world stage - whether you’re working as a rising executive for a multinational corporation, a diplomat for your country, as a senior officer for a branch of the military, or in any role and in any organization where international activities impact your organization’s effectiveness - is critically important now more than ever. We are proud of the graduates of the diplomacy program, many of whom occupy influential roles in leading organizations throughout the world. Example positions include Senior Adviser to the Minister of International Trade and Maritime Domain Awareness Analyst. Part of our recipe for the program's success is the caliber of students Norwich University attracts. A large number of our incoming students have experience abroad prior to enrolling in our master’s program, and many are working in an international capacity while completing the degree. This exposes students to a range of worldviews to help broaden their perspective, and a rich network to draw from for years to come. Norwich diplomacy program graduates are employed by organizations such as the United Nations, General Dynamics, and the U.S. State Department, and in positions such as intelligence advisor, communications director, and government relations director. A recent survey* showed that 85% of graduates who wanted to advance in their career were successful in doing so. Our graduates want to share this dynamic educational experience with others. In a recent survey*, 90% of our alumni respondents said they would recommend the Master of Arts in Diplomacy online program to someone they know.

Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis
Bachelor of Science (BS)
Norwich University in Northfield, VT
It is not surprising that Norwich University’s first online degree completion program, the Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis (SSDA), is offered exclusively to active duty, retired, and reserve military personnel who are assigned to USSOCOM. The reputation of Norwich University is built not only on the quality of instruction, but also on the legacy of nearly 200 years of graduates. Our graduates are noted for their leadership and service to the nation, and we take our mission to educate in order to help them advance in the battlefield, boardroom, and beyond very seriously. Specially designed for active duty, Reserve and National Guard soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines assigned to or retired from one of the subordinate commands within the U.S. Special Operations Command, and NATO Special Operations Forces, the Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis program focuses on strategies for improving the security, external relationships, and overall well-being of communities and countries. Students gain the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to develop these strategies through a comprehensive curriculum that builds on their military education and experience, enabling them to apply what they learn in class to initiatives and field exercises related to their current or past areas of deployment. Students are taught by a highly knowledgeable faculty that includes the former assistant provost of the Naval Postgraduate School, retired military officers, and defense strategy experts from across the globe. Research, critical thinking, ethical decision making, and leadership skills are fostered and woven throughout the curriculum, giving students the tools they need to advance within the military or transition to a new career. As part of their final program requirements, students complete a series of in-depth, independent research projects on a country or region of their choosing. Based on their research, students develop recommendations for improving conditions in their selected area that take into consideration the historical, political, cultural, and economic influences at play. In addition to its relevant application in the field, the research findings contribute to the military’s body of knowledge of regions around the globe. An academic credential, such as a bachelor’s degree, has become critically important for career advancement in both the military and the civilian world. As one recent alumnus, James Karr, put it, recruiters and employers in the private sector are reluctant to consider job candidates without this piece of paper, in spite of their training and many accomplishments within the military. This is exactly where the program fits in. The online Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis degree completion program was inspired to capitalize on the unique experiences and training of SOF (Special Operations Forces) at the Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS) at Fort Bragg, NC, and to complement them, helping our students complete their formal education and prepare them for the future - whether it’s advancement within their command or transitioning to a new career in the private sector or public service. When we asked our alumni if they would recommend the Norwich SSDA program to someone they know, our survey respondents* strongly agreed. Maybe it’s because 93% of them feel they are more effective in their jobs as a result of the Norwich SSDA program. A number of attractive career paths may be considered by members of Special Operations armed with a degree in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis. In a recent survey, 86% of our graduate respondents said they feel their Norwich education gives them a competitive edge in the job market. Today, the Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis program is filled with Special Forces leaders from around the world in all branches of the military. According to a recent alumni survey, more than half of the respondents said they completed their degree while serving active duty in the U.S. military. Another 29% reported that they are currently employed as a civilian in the federal government. In talking with recent graduates, it is clear they felt the Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis degree from Norwich University was relevant to their work in the military and would help facilitate career advancement and transition opportunities.
