Founded as the nation’s first private military college just four decades after the United States was established, Norwich University is an important part of America’s own proud military history. Our graduates have served in every American conflict since the Mexican-American War, and nearly 200 have served as general officers in the U.S. and foreign armed forces including Admiral of the Navy George Dewey, General Isaac D. White, and General Gordon R. Sullivan. Our Master of Arts in Military History program reflects, honors, and extends Norwich’s proud military heritage. Attracting highly motivated and passionate students from across the country, our rigorous military history graduate program provides an in-depth exploration of the role of the military and war throughout history. Informed by the American Historical Society’s guidelines for master’s programs in history, our curriculum teaches students to navigate differing historical interpretations, synthesize diverse types of historical knowledge, and develop strong analytical abilities through intensive research and writing assignments. At the heart of our program is our second-to-none military history faculty. They include prolific book authors and editors, sought-after speakers, and nationally recognized experts who regularly present their work at the annual Society for Military History conference. In addition to cultivating a highly interactive learning environment, faculty members serve as mentors to students throughout their program of study. Although few will ever receive the critical acclaim of Norwich alum Carlo D’Este, the Pritzker Military History Library prize-winning Norwich history graduate whose books are read by millions across the globe, a considerable number of our graduates impact the way in which history is interpreted every day. Norwich history students and alumni write articles that appear in popular and academic history periodicals, complete and publish book manuscripts, and lecture or teach in community colleges, cultural organizations, or the schools and communities where they live. Since completing the Master of Arts in Military History degree at Norwich, 34% of recent alumni survey* respondents have published an article in a journal, magazine, or other forum. Norwich military history program graduates are employed by organizations such as the United States Naval War College, American Military University, and The Boeing Company, and in positions such as history instructor, collections manager, and reporter.

History
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Bennington College in Bennington, VT
History is a challenging and rewarding conversation with the past. Our history faculty, whose expertise spans American and international history as well as early modern European intellectual history, mediate these dialogues in classrooms that are alive with “the pastness of the past—a rich understanding of the ways in which historical actors lived in and engaged with worlds that were completely different from our own. We introduce students to the primary texts that will become their conversation partners, and facilitate their ability to find patterns and points of congruence that enable them to continue this conversation on their own. Our curriculum presents an array of ways for students to internalize historical thinking, and incorporate it into their work in other fields. In addition to courses on American and international history, we offer courses on international law, the Constitution, diplomacy, human rights, and local history; we teach the histories of science, magic, medicine, books, and gender. Advanced projects classes and tutorials offer opportunities to pursue individual and collaborative interdisciplinary independent projects. In studying history, students learn to work with primary sources and put those sources in context. They work with secondary sources, and use classroom discussion as a collaborative process for working out readings, ideas, and meanings. They learn to formulate their own arguments and develop the writing skills that will allow them to express their arguments in a clear and cogent fashion. In short, they learn to engage and contribute to a larger intellectual community.

Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Green Mountain College in Poultney, VT
History at Green Mountain is designed to nurture and produce professional skills while studying the infinitely varied and exciting world of the human past. The history program at Green Mountain College combines uncommon academic rigor with real world experience. A few examples: Jake Musial ’11 interned as a lab technician in the North American Archaeology Lab of The Museum of Natural History. Clara Walsh ’13 made a presentation on art and architectural traditions in the Islamic world at the Seventh Northwest World History Association Conference. It’s rare for an undergraduate student to present shoulder-to-shoulder with professional academics, but it happens often here at GMC. Individualized attention, facilitated through small classes and our advising program, helps students move on to top graduate schools or into jobs in their field of study. The curriculum stresses developing and sharpening student skills which have broad applications to such careers as law school, museum studies, archival positions as well as many other graduate and professional programs. The program offers a wide range of courses in American, Asian, European, and world history. Many of those courses have an environmental theme in keeping with the overall mission of the College. The senior seminar provides students with the opportunity to conduct original research involving primary sources on a topic of their choosing to demonstrate the abilities and approaches they have developed in the program.

University of Vermont in Burlington, VT
To help students acquire these necessary skills and to gain insight into the meaning and matter of history, UVM's department of history offers a wide variety of courses aimed at the first-year student, all of which require analysis and writing in some form. The department recommends that incoming first-year students take any of its introductory courses, numbered 09 through 096, all of which assume no previous university-level work in history. Students should select the introductory course or course sequence that seems closest to their current interests. First-year students should not take any 100-level history courses without first consulting the instructor, and normally no first-year student will be allowed into a 100-level course without AP credits or their equivalent.
