Bachelor of Science (BS)
Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT
An accounting degree, complemented by the liberal arts core curriculum, fosters these skills and provides the foundation for career-long success. The required courses in the accounting program build steadily on one another, culminating in a research-based seminar. Classmate and community partnerships are an integral part of our accounting discipline, as are the development and application of presentation skills. To become a Certified Public Accountant (i.e. licensed to practice accounting professionally) will require a Bachelor's degree and a total of 150-academic credits in all states. Although there is some variation among states as to specific courses needed within the 150 hours, the accounting major curriculum at Saint Michael's can be readily augmented by existing courses to meet the content specifications. To accumulate additional credit hours toward the 150 hour requirement, some students use advance placement credits from high school, summer course work/summer internships performed for academic credit, etc. Others pursue a one-year Master's degree in accounting or business in graduate school after receiving their Saint Michael's Bachelor's degree. Saint Michael's has agreements with a number of graduate programs to set up potential graduate pathways for our accounting graduates. There are also many other accounting-oriented career opportunities in corporations, government agencies and non-profit organizations that do not require licensing as a CPA and are therefore not subject to the 150-credit hour requirement. Accounting is referred to as the language of business. It is the vehicle by which business activities are translated into meaningful financial results. As such, a solid understanding of accounting is vital for business leaders and intrinsic to the success of any company. That, in turn, makes an accounting degree and the skills that come with it highly desirable in the global marketplace. The professors in the accounting program at Saint Michael's draw on their professional experience to ensure their students a clear understanding of accounting systems and their importance in leading organizations. Develop and apply the lessons and skills you learn in the classroom by being the financial leader in student organizations or a teacher’s assistant or tutor in the accounting program. Small class sizes, particularly in upper level courses, contribute strongly to student development and the close personal relationships between professors and students. The accounting program at Saint Michael's prepares students for careers in a broad cross-section of organizations, including public accounting firms; small and large corporations; government and non-profit organizations; and further study in accounting and business. The coursework, along with the student’s advisor and other support services at Saint Michael's, guides students through a rigorous and gratifying program that will help them realize their ambitions. The accounting program has a long history of successful internship placements with local organizations and accounting firms and uses its network of well-placed alumni to find excellent opportunities with larger market accounting firms for its students.

Bachelor of Science (BS)
Salve Regina University in Newport, RI
Our accounting programs prepare students to join one of the world’s most respected professions. Businesses, governments and nonprofits rely on accounting professionals to provide insight into business operations, lend credibility to financial reports, and comply with complex regulatory requirements. Coursework encourages students to become leaders and decision makers, using critical thinking skills to make rational, ethical decisions. Our Program Accounting majors complete the foundational courses required to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, and they earn at least 120 of the 150 credit hours required for licensure in most states. Some students satisfy the 150-credit requirement in just four years by maximizing their enrollment each semester, transferring AP credits or taking summer classes. Others complete our combined bachelor’s/master’s program to satisfy the requirement in five years. Coursework is full of hands-on problem solving, using case studies and team projects to develop analytical and communication skills. In the capstone course, students perform issues-based research using professional databases, participate in formal debates and write a research paper on a current accounting topic. Our program also provides a foundation for other professional certifications such Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). These certifications require further education, professional experience and exams.

Federal agencies include the Internal Revenue Service, Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit and Insurance Corporation. Internal auditors perform compliance and operational audits within their organization. They examine and evaluate an organization’s internal controls, financial and information systems, management procedures and the efficiency and effectiveness of operations. While most of our graduates work in these primary accounting fields, others have pursued careers as security analysts, fixed income traders, financial planners, human resource managers, recruiters and university administrators.

Business Administration: Accounting
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA)
Bryant University in Smithfield, RI
The way that organizations (both public accounting firms and corporations) conduct business and the role of accountants in organizations has changed dramatically. To be an effective leader in the current business environment, accountants must be knowledgeable in a wide range of disciplines, including finance, management, and marketing. In response, the accounting profession has undergone its most significant changes in recent history; changes that require enhanced skills and knowledge for career success. Because accountants need to be business people first, knowledge of accounting must be firmly grounded in an understanding of the complete range of business functions. In addition, accountants must be accomplished communicators. Bryant’s accounting program is designed to meet the challenges posed by such changes. The accounting curriculum provides a flexible program of study relevant to all areas of accounting. Elective courses and internship opportunities permit students to pursue areas of specific career interests. Additionally, through the integration of business and liberal studies, students obtain the knowledge, sensitivities, and skills mandated by an increasingly complex, globally interdependent and technologically sophisticated world. Bryant’s accounting program provides the sufficient background for the major professional examinations. In addition, qualified undergraduate students are eligible to take up to two graduate courses during their senior year to get a head start on completing the Master of Professional Accountancy (MPAc) and MPAC with Tax Cencentration. Both courses can be applied to their graduate degree, and one course can be applied to their undergraduate degree. MPAc enables Bryant undergraduate students to complete the required 150 credits to be certified as a CPA in as little as 4 1⁄2 years.
