Business: Accounting
Bachelor of Arts (BA)
Johnson State College in Johnson, VT
Accounting is the language of business, but business isn’t the only field where accountants are in demand these days. Nonprofit organizations, schools and hospitals, government agencies and grassroots enterprises all need accountants. That’s because the image of an accountant as a “bean counter” is rapidly fading. Instead, today’s accountant focuses on auditing controls — both preventive controls (designed to prevent errors or irregularities from happening) and forensic controls (designed to find errors or irregularities after they occur). They are trouble-shooters and puzzle-solvers with a knack for numbers and an eye for details.

Certificate (CERT)
Johnson State College in Johnson, VT
On July 1, 2014, Vermont adopted interstate equivalency standards for certified public accountants (CPAs) and changed state licensing rules in ways that make it easier for accountants to practice in other states. The changes require licensed accountants and certified public accountants (CPAs) to have one year of experience and a bachelor’s degree plus 30 additional college credits, for a total of 150 credits. Moreover, 42 of the 150 credits must be in accounting-related courses. Previously, the requirement was two years of experience and a bachelor’s degree (120 credits) alone. JSC’s Certificate of Proficiency in Accounting is a flexible and convenient way to earn the additional credits required to meet the new licensing standards and sit for the national CPA exam. Classes may be taken on campus, online or, through JSC’s External Degree Program, on weekends in Montpelier, Rutland, St. Albans and Winooski. There is no set curriculum, as the program of study is tailored to each student’s particular situation. A person who never took any accounting-related courses as an undergraduate would need to earn all 42 of those credits through the certificate program, while someone with a B.A. in business might need to fewer accounting-related courses but would still need to accrue the required additional 30 credits. A full-time student could complete the certificate in one year: In two semesters if only 30 credits are needed, or in two semesters plus the summer if 42 credits are needed. Students enrolled in the certificate program are eligible for financial aid.

Entrepreneurship
Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
Vermont Technical College in Randolph, VT
During the recent economic downturn, many young people saw their parents being laid off and their peers having trouble launching traditional careers. Partly out of necessity, today’s students increasingly look to their own talents and “personal brands,” not to corporate paychecks, as the basis for a sturdy future. According to the Kauffman Index of Startup Activity, a national early indicator of new business creation in the United States, activity rose 10% in 2015 in a sharp contrast to the downward trend started in 2010. Their calculations approximate 530,000 new business owners each month during the year in 2015. Entrepreneurs play a critical role in economic development. Vermont Tech’s Entrepreneurship curriculum is designed to help the emerging entrepreneur harness opportunities, ignite change, and build a successful business. Students will learn about transforming ideas into enterprises that add value. The AAS degree in Entrepreneurship exposes students to an applied academic approach to the study of Entrepreneurship by focusing on creativity and innovation and offering business fundamentals such as accounting, finance, management, communication and marketing in the context of planning and launching a new business. Students who complete the associate degree program will be able to identify, plan, and evaluate new venture opportunities. A student with an Associate of Applied Science in Entrepreneurship will be able to: Complete the steps of the accounting cycle, including processing and recording typical cash receipts, cash payments, sales, vendor, and payroll transactions Prepare and interpret financial statements for service and merchandising businesses on an accrual basis Understand module integrated accounting software and use Quickbooks software to record and process typical transactions and prepare financial statements Use document and communication collaboration systems to create business documents and to design and develop newsletters, brochures, and other promotional materials Write business letters, memos, email messages, instant messages, and blog posts Create reports using accurate research methods and citations Develop and deliver an effective oral presentation Understand the psychology of face-to-face communication and the role of non-verbal communication Demonstrate successful team skills, effective listening, and professional behavior Effectively utilize resume-writing, interviewing, and job-seeking skills to advance career goals Understand the key characteristics and terminology of the business disciplines of management, human resources, marketing, and finance Recognize a business opportunity that meets their individual needs Understand how to launch an entrepreneurial career The student, in conjunction with the department chair, may develop a sequence of courses to best meet their background and needs that still satisfies the degree requirements.
